Proverbs 25:15 New International Version (NIV) 15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.
Proverbs 25:15 The Message (MSG) 15 Patient persistence pierces through indifference; gentle speech breaks down rigid defenses.
Proverbs 25:15 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) 15 With patience, you can make anyone change their thinking, even a ruler. Gentle speech is very powerful.
I struggled with some of the words in the bible because they didn’t seem to translate well, they made no sense. The more I study the bible, the more I come to realize that there’s an incredible depth, wisdom and honesty not found anywhere else. As the chaff falls away the true seed can be seen. One of the things I struggled with was understanding what a saying meant, like the proverb above. I get the second part, but the first part? What do I have to do with Rulers?
Sometimes it’s difficult to translate directly into English from the original language – for instance the word “love” in the English language has 17 different words in Greek to express different subtleties of the idea being expressed. We dump it into one word and miss much of the depth of the original.
I can get my head around the paraphrase from The Message or the Easy to Read version – it captures the essence and often adds more depth to the words.
There are many things in the bible that get people riled up – it’s supposed to. The bible is about radical transformation. It’s about God’s plan. What I think is most upsetting to the world is that God is perfectly just. His justice is perfect and because of that, the things that He judges us on aren’t graded on a curve. However, His love is perfect too, and He really wants us. That’s the way love is, right? So He comes down as Jesus to wash away our sins when it comes time for us to be judged.
If you believe we’re evolved from primordial soup, where did the soup come from? If you say it came from “X”, where did that come from? A quark? Where did that come from? To me science is contradictory in trying to explain creation – nothing is nothing science tells us and you can’t create something out of nothing. Yet science is trying to prove that you can create something out of nothing, so is nothing really nothing or is it something? Huh? Where did that something come from originally? Eventually, you’re going to say “I don’t know where that came from, but I believe…..” That’s called faith. I think it makes more sense to put my faith in something that isn’t self-contradictory.
The Bible makes sense of this world and brings order to why we here. Are the translations and surface readings of the Bible getting in the way of you exploring it and gaining understanding?
