Matthew 6:24 (NLT)
24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”
Matthew 8:26 (NLT)
26 Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.
Suddenly there was great calm after Christ told the storm to mellow out. We need that today. Extremism on both sides created the opportunity for evil to raise its ugly head yesterday in Charlottesville and it did. Fighting hate with hate just doesn’t work. Fighting from a position of self-righteousness and claiming the holy ground of being “right” is just wrong when it’s our ideas. Those are reserved for God and God alone. It’s not the province of humans. God says it’s wrong, both sides. You cannot serve two masters – God and money, God and dogma, God and human.
We don’t win when we hate. We don’t win when blood lust drives our passionate response. We win when we love. We win when we reconcile, not when we tolerate. We win when we listen to Christ, God and let the Holy Spirit guide our lives. We win when we follow the narrow path that leads to redemption at the end of our days. We win when love drives our passionate response.
Don’t get me wrong, there is a place for fighting evil, but evil fighting evil is just evil no matter who comes out on top. In a war between Pol Pot and Idi Amin are there any winners?
John 16:20 (NLT)
20 “I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy….“
Yep, the world will rejoice as we walk from The Way. I’m sure it is today because we’re walking that direction.
There will be some whose grief will eventually turn to sudden joy.
John 16:22-24 (NLT)
22 “So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. 23 At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. 24 You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.”
Abundant joy, not hateful rhetoric and violence. Both extremes are wrong. Hating hate with hate is the human way of things. Hating hate with love is the way of Christ. Follow His lead, follow Him on the narrow path. Ask and you shall receive.
It’s time to get really radical: follow the only leader and go back to the narrow path.
