1 Peter 4:8
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
So, I guess if I can’t stop sinning, just love and everything’ll be alright. OK, cool.
Whoa Nellie, slow down! Let’s ponder this for a while cowboy.
As you know, there are two types of love – self centered love and God centered love. Fact of the matter is that self centered love will get you nothing in God’s eyes, no multitudes will be covered. Nope, not even one.
Now, God centered love, one that focuses on giving, not getting, now that might just cover over some sin, maybe even a multitude or two.
Love that’s God centric is sacrificial, is done for the other person, is directed by other centered intentions. It is not the feel good, look at me and how great I am, may I have a small pattering of applause for me please, oooh, thank you it was nothing really kind of love.
God’s love is awesome, huge, powerful, intense, unsettling, compassionate, and can move mountains. It’s so powerful, it can even cover for a multitude of sins. Understand though that that’s a consequence, not a goal to be obtained, not a direct outcome of being loving.
Where does your love come from? What’s its source? What’s its reason?
Love that glorifies God, that is done sacrificially, that is not done for self – that’s the love we’re talking about.
Love hugely, unceasingly, in God’s honor, and change the world. You just might find some sin covered in the process.
