Colossians 3:23-24 (MSG)
22-25 Servants, do what you’re told by your earthly masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you’re serving is Christ.
Matthew 5:43-47 (ESV)
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?”
1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIV)
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Servants, do what you’re told by your earthly masters. Heck no, I’m no stinkin’ servant – I serve NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or not. Hmmmm. Sure, you may be the very best on earth at what you do, you may have more power than anyone on earth, you may be self funded in everything you do, you may blah blah, but I doubt it. No one is not beholden to someone, something. You buy gas, you are beholden to the supplier for what you use, you pay for it with money earned from someone/thing who you are beholden to pay you. If either of them refuse, you don’t get what you want. We all serve others all the time and we call it a choice. Where we go and what we do are choices. That we have to do it isn’t a choice.
Since it’s a choice of who and how we serve, let’s choose wisely. Organic or not? Grass fed or well marbled? Made in China or USA? Hydrocarbon or solar? Self or God?
In the scripture above we have some steps to follow to do it right. Serve. Don’t do the minimum, do your best, and do it for God, for Christ, our ultimate master, not yourself. Do it for those who you expect nothing back in return – a one way street of giving, like Christ modeled for us.
Choose who/how you serve wisely, and serve with the passion and commitment Christ served us with. Through Christ we are a chosen people – and it’s not a culture/race/heritage/blah blah based club. Know Christ, accept Christ, love Christ, be forgiven by Christ, serve Christ, follow Christ. With your best effort. With the same level of intensity you use defending your independence.
You can be, we can be, a people of God and receive His love, mercy, grace through submission and servitude.
