Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (MSG)
18-20 After looking at the way things are on this earth, here’s what I’ve decided is the best way to live: Take care of yourself, have a good time, and make the most of whatever job you have for as long as God gives you life. And that’s about it. That’s the human lot. Yes, we should make the most of what God gives, both the bounty and the capacity to enjoy it, accepting what’s given and delighting in the work. It’s God’s gift! God deals out joy in the present, the now. It’s useless to brood over how long we might live.
Isaiah 40:27-31 (ESV)
27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
John 12:35-40 (MSG)
35-36 Jesus said, “For a brief time still, the light is among you. Walk by the light you have so darkness doesn’t destroy you. If you walk in darkness, you don’t know where you’re going. As you have the light, believe in the light. Then the light will be within you, and shining through your lives. You’ll be children of light.”
What’s a good time?
One of the things that I wonder about is why God blesses some and puts tons of challenges in other people’s lives. I really don’t know an answer that’s comfortable. Having had a few “life issues” myself, and knowing/coming alongside others who have struggles far, far greater than mine, I surmise it’s because I needed to make a choice on which path I was going to follow. By being shown some insight into the wrong way, I was able to choose the right way. I choose The Way. He gives us the strength to overcome and he carries us when we can’t – when we choose Him, not ourselves.
God doesn’t want us His followers to by pucker butted, uptight, sanctimonious, self-righteous jerks (trying to stay away from the better adjectives because it offends my wife), He wants us to enjoy the blessings he’s given us; He wants us to use the blessings he’s given us to make the world a better place in His glory, not ours; He wants us to serve and make a difference, no matter what our circumstances, no matter what our troubles.
For a brief time we have the light and we need to walk in it’s security to stay on the path. God graces us with blessings and He wants us to leverage them for good. He knows what we’ve been doing. He’ll carry us when we can’t carry ourselves. Faith, trust, love. He wants us to have a good time following The Way forward.
