Miracles, love, hope and life Isaiah 7:14 Luke 1:30-35 Matthew 1:19-24

Isaiah 7:14 (ESV)
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Luke 1:30-35 (ESV)
30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

I wonder what the folks listening to Isaiah thought. A virgin giving birth and he’ll be God with us. Um, sure Isaiah. What else ya got? Everyone “knew” that it was impossible to get pregnant unless you did what you do to get pregnant.

Then, there’s Joseph: YOU’RE WHAT????????? Mary, WTH???? No, Joseph, seriously, I haven’t fooled around – I’m pregnant with Immanuel. Um sure Mary.

Like any man, Joseph looked for a way out. Unlike most men, he didn’t want to shame her, so he looked quietly. Then, he had a little one way chat with an angle sent from God.

Matthew 1:19-24 (ESV)
19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife.

How many of us won’t believe the miracle is the miracle it claims to be? Think about it – a miracle. God with us. God for us. God’s love for us manifested just like he said he would.

Impossible is a word we know but God doesn’t. The amazing wonder of Christ, of a love so intense we have no conception of what it can be, here, for us.

Celebrate Christ for the miracles, love, hope and life he brings us here and for eternity. Then be the miracles, love, hope and life he calls us to be.

Let’s be like Mary. Luke 1:38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.(ESV)

Nothing is impossible.
