John 14:16-17 (NIV)
16. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17. the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
This is where the rubber hits the road. We have Christ’s word, radical in their purpose, direction, calling, and impact, the pivot point of western culture, yet still just words that we have to try to live. We’re wholly incapable of getting much past “Go” with our entrenched filters and paradigms, with how we are in our natural state.
Just imagine what it sounded like back then – hey dudes (and dudettes), I’m leavin, goin on up to heaven to be with my Father, but I’m leaving something behind to help you on your journey, my Spirit. The Spirit of Truth. You’ll struggle with it, the world will not understand it and will eventually try to claim it as its own, it’s own natural outgrowth, it’s own natural humanness. But, it’s all about God, and me, not the world. It’s his to truly separate yourself from the world.
The Spirit of Truth is your engine to get past “Go”, is your helper to be less like you and more like Christ in the manner he lays out for us, not how we envision it. I once thought good enough was good enough. Now I know how far from The Truth that thinking is. The Spirit of Truth leading me (even though I’m fighting the bit in my mouth every step of the way) away from “Go” and towards Christ like behavior in all I do. Towards by no means implies I’ve arrived, only that I’m crawling towards it.
John 15:12-14(NLT)
12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.
He did this for us. The Spirit of Truth is shining light on the lies, waiting for a welcome home in my heart. May you welcome the Spirit of Truth as Christ brought it to us through his sacrafice.
