1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLT)
19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
How do your furnish your temple? Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, that gift from God who fills that God shaped hole in our heart that we try to fill with everything else in our chase to feel fulfilled, our chase to feel complete, our chase to be at peace. Our body.
Zechariah 1:1-4 (NLT)
1 In November of the second year of King Darius’s reign, the Lord gave this message to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah and grandson of Iddo:
2 “I, the Lord, was very angry with your ancestors. 3 Therefore, say to the people, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.’ 4 Don’t be like your ancestors who would not listen or pay attention when the earlier prophets said to them, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Turn from your evil ways, and stop all your evil practices.’”
It’s not like we’re the first to do this, or that this is a western problem. Scholars figure the Zechariah scripture was written around 520BC. It’s not like it didn’t exist before then either – look at Eve and the first Adam. It’s not like its a problem that doesn’t exist today, though, again, we’re really pushing the envelope (in places) to try to chase God out.
Hebrews 12:28 (NLT)
28 Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear [reverence] and awe.
Instead, we try to chase him out. How’s it working filling your heart with money, things, drugs, porn, etc.? Marriage working out? Work? Contentment? I know a few who seem to pull if off, not many. Do you ever stop to really wonder why? One friend, many years ago, said something along the lines of “quit talking about God to me – he can take his shit show back with him and leave me alone”. And this was to one of these blogs I plop on Facebook. His life sucks and he doesn’t know it. I do because I know his life and what he could have. And no, he’s not happy.
Acts 13:38-39 (NLT)
38 “Brothers, listen! We are here to proclaim that through this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. 39 Everyone who believes in him is made right in God’s sight—something the law of Moses could never do.
There’s only one way to really furnish your temple, to really fill that God shaped hole in your heart, and that’s by the one who created it.
