Matthew 5:43-45 (NLT)
43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.”
Talk about counter cultural. Love you enemies! Just as a further proof that we continue to slip away from the way of God, we embrace “hate your enemy” or “tolerate your enemy”. We spout of tolerance, with it’s insolently and smugly implied superiority, instead of reconciliation. We hate instead of love. We abuse instead of love. We build power bases on the backs of the powerless.
Counter cultural to love your enemies? Should it be that way? I think we’d all agree that it shouldn’t. Yes there is evil and evil must be vanquished. God will do it in his time, in his way. We are to love.
Matthew 7:24 (NLT)
24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”
Looks like we could use a little bit more listening and following today. We are losing wisdom and forgetting our past as irrelevant to today’s modern, advanced, better than before society. Same thing they said in the ‘60’s. Building houses on sand we are and in our smugness, we don’t want to see the parallels.
Love your enemies. This is what he’s given us and it’s freaking awesome. This is what he’s done. I read a humanist blog the other day and he was proclaiming this as a human trait. What an idiot. It was as 100% counter cultural back then as it is today. It’s time for a counter cultural revolution – otherwise known as a revival.
1 Chronicles 16:8 (NLT)
8 Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.
