“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Twenty eight words. Amazing what God can pack into twenty right words. Think about the word life there. What life? I think, when wrapped around the surrounding words and verses, it’s our whole life – certainly the next life, and this life too. He declares that He is what you need to sustain yourself here and beyond.
It’s pointing to the hunger we have for contentment, joy, peace, love. The world will tell you to get there through better boats, cars, clothes, looks, performance, mate, job, works – through a life focused on self, vanity and money, what you can do for you. Like an addict, quickly the high wears off and you need more right now, but you need more of the more to get the same “high”. So the cycle repeats until you’re spending all your time chasing something that doesn’t do what you’re hoping for; it leaves you dry. Drugs, money, vanity, looks, etc. – all the same. Like a dog chasing its tail, chasing something that’s not fulfilling, but pretending like you’ve caught something that is. How’s that working for ya?
The bread of life – sustainment through this life, the map, the sustainment to the next life. This life can be joyful, can be peaceful, can be fulfilling, etc., but it’s nothing like heaven.
What do you want to commit your resources to?
He who comes to me…, he who believes in me…. Pretty simple, so hard.
