Deuteronomy 30:15-16

When does it matter?

Deuteronomy 30:15-16
15 See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

There is a God. He commands us to love and obey him. He gives us knowledge of good and evil. If we choose to love him, we get blessed. We have to enter into new land to get those blessings.

Some might ask “Why does he command us to love him? Isn’t that pretty self centered? Why would I worship an ego maniac?”

There’s another way to look at it though – God knows a whole lot more about love than we do. He is looking at love like he looks at love, not like we look at love and he is setting our expectations for us. Loving God is not like loving your wife, children  or family. Loving God is not like loving Boston cream donuts, chocolate peanut butter ice cream, or grilled meat. It’s a love that’s so much greater, that He is setting the bar appropriately high, sky high, on what His expectation of love is. We are to love him like He loves us. He knows what perfect love is, we don’t. He sets the bar for love.

We are to be obedient to His laws and commands too. Isn’t that what we should be doing if we love him? Isn’t that why he writes these on our heart when he creates us?

He gives us the choice though, through free will, to agree with him or not. He sets before us today, each day, life and prosperity or death and destruction. It’s his truth, a perfect truth that does not change with the situation or times. It’s a truth that has been the same since the beginning of time and will be the same until the end of time. It’s our decision though.

It takes action, movement, to get it. The Israelites did not get the blessing until they moved with his direction, until they followed where he lead them, obediently, out of love, trust and faith. We to will not get the blessings He promises us unless we move.

I was moved yesterday in a very disruptive way. He sets before me today life and prosperity, death and destruction. I’ll walk in obedience to Him, keep those laws and commands which he has written on my heart, and enter the land He blesses me with.

When does it matter? Today. God wants us, he wants us to serve, obey, love. He is a great God, the only God, The Creator, and he cares for is like this? I’m putting on my hiking shoes (bad ankles, can’t wear boots) and gleefully going where he sends me. Thank you God for getting me going. May I always follow the path you lay for me.

  1. Love it, Pops. In your next post, you should write about the experience of being let-go and how you’re processing everything.
