Luke 6:46-49 (ESV)
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
Romans 5:20-21n (ESV)
20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Who’s heard the words of Christ? Not the droning of a boring Sunday morning service – how can Christ be talked about in mono-tone blah blah blah? Not the spittle projecting sanctimonious hate monger spewing venom and lies – who can turn Christ’s love into that? Not the slick Televangelist taking money and praying on people’s trust in the Lord while enriching themselves. Not the hypocritical neighbor sleeping with his second or third girlfriend while carrying his bible around – do they really follow the teachings of Christ?
God has a plan for how things work. If you think today is working just fine, I don’t know what to say. When expectations are set so low that today is OK, it’s like saying that we’re doing really well – I mean look at what goes on at the Jersey Shore! Compared to that, we’re great! But, the Jersey Shore is who we are. Chicago is who we are. Radicalism is who we are. Hypocrisy is who we are. Corporately, we’re sliding down a slippery slope. We’ve built a house of cards on a beach of sand, not on the rock that’s deep beneath the sand.
The love of Christ is who we are too. Who has the morals to discern what is right and wrong? Christ – he set up the rules, he is The Rock, The Truth, The Way, The Light – the foundation of truth..
Who follows Christ? Who has dug deep for the rock solid foundation? Who has built a foundation in Christ that’s solid and can withstand the currents of this world?
What’s your life built on? Can you stand up to the currents of the world and be counter cultural?
Daniel 3:16-18 (MSG)
16-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, “Your threat means nothing to us. If you throw us in the fire, the God we serve can rescue us from your roaring furnace and anything else you might cook up, O king. But even if he doesn’t, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference, O king. We still wouldn’t serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up.”
