John 15:12 (ESV)
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
John 4:18 (ESV)
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
Lord, I’m not sure how to love others the way you love me. They are selfish, self-centered, needy, arrogant, ignorant, lacking in self awareness, everything.
Pfffffffft – yeah, who’s writing what? I describe myself and try to apply it to others as a reason to not – not do what I’m called to do, not do what’s right, not do what was done for me.
Psalm 8:4-6 (ERV)
4 And I wonder, “Why are people so important to you?
Why do you even think about them?
Why do you care so much about humans?
Why do you even notice them?”
5 But you made them almost like gods
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You put them in charge of everything you made.
You put everything under their control.
This is a big why question for sure, and maybe God is just a dumb ideologue of love. Doesn’t He know any better? I mean, He created us to be almost like gods, crowned with glory and honor and look what we’ve done to the world. A lot of it obtensibly in the name of God, but not in anything that He’s told us how to do it.
Mark 10:42-45 (MSG)
42-45 “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around,” he said, “and when people get a little power how quickly it goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for many who are held hostage.”
A servant. Sure, after I serve myself first. Self service, right? Again, pffffffft. Seriously? That’s what’s gotten us to this place. We’ve observed how godless rulers have thrown their weight around – whether the church, the press, or the power brokers of the world. We see the church run by man make horrible decisions. We see religion made by man destroying love. We see the press become an advocate, not a protector, ignoring the truth to protect their God. We see whole societies subjected to further economic gain of a few.
That is NOT what God is about, not what He sent His Son here for, not what our reason is. It’s where we’ve gotten to, and it’s not what our original purpose is, was, or should be.
Luke 10:3 (ESV)
3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
Go. Shake off the dust of the world and how we’ve always done things. Go back to the original plan. Feed a homeless person this week and talk to them. Volunteer to pack food for Haiti. Fix the broken door on your neighbor’s home. Mentor the troubled son of the single mom down the street. Buy someone’s groceries when you’re in line.
Fight for love in a world who’s lost sight of what it means. Turn to the love that is pure. Turn to the source. Turn to Christ.
