Mark 10:42-45 (NLT)
42 So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Can we do it? We are so used to lording over and being lorded over that being a servant seems foreign, weak, stupid. Yet Christ is telling us that to be a real leader – one that makes a difference that pushes good, that is just, that benefits the greater good first, not last, – that takes a servant.
More radical thinking, more contrarian thought, more ideological stuff. We should heed the words though unless we think that we’re doing well today.
For even Christ, God, came to serve and actually give his life for us. He changed the direction of mankind and gave us hope. The culture of the west takes it as basic rights, but as we’re seeing, what we took from Christ as normal and right, much of the world doesn’t think that way. That’s Christ’s influence.
Can we do it? Can we break the chains of authority, hate, power, lust, etc., and become servants to us all? Can you imagine a home where we were all servants? Think we might be in a different place?
Can we do it?
