James 4:8 (NLT)
8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
Isaiah 32:17 (NLT)
17 And this righteousness will bring peace.
Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever.
Think of a divided loyalty. How well does that work? How do you feel stuck between your wife/husband and mom (if you happen to have the mother in law from – well, the stereo type)? How do you feel when you’re stuck in the middle? The reason we get stuck in the middle is because we have divided loyalty.
Now, what does that get us when we’re stuck in the middle between God and his perfection, his righteousness, his beauty, his love, and the world with its pain, material goods, lies, greed, lust, and deception? Think about the promises of God and wonder why they aren’t more prevalent? What in the world is so captivating to our souls that we pursue it at the expense of pursuing God?
It’s who we are, how we’re wired, the cost of Adam’s original indiscretion, the cost of free will. With free will we’re given a choice and we choose. Our loyalty is divided by choice.
Choose the narrow path of righteousness. Choose undivided loyalty.
