Matthew 12:30-37 (NLT)
30 “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.
31 “So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.
33 “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad. 34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. 35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. 36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”
Who is this guy Christ? Who dare come and proclaim either you’re with me or you’re against me, and if you’re against me you’re going to have some tough questions to answer, with some eternal consequences to deal with? Who gave this guy the idea that he could do that? And why should we even listen? Who is this guy? If I’m a tree that produces good fruit, isn’t that good enough? I’m not as bad as the folks on Jersey Shore. I do more good than bad. That’s enough you might be thinking.
Hmmmm, no. it’s not. It’s that thinking that has gotten us the world we have today, not what we could have, what we should have, if we stop opposing Christ and work with him. We will have to give an account at the end of our days, and only Christ can shield us from the consequences of our sin. Only Christ can take the punishment for our sins that will allow us into God’s presence. Only Christ can free us from who we are.
Hebrews 4:14 (NLT)
14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.
Or, choose to believe something that isn’t from the High Priest in heaven. Understand though the decision you’re making.
Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT)
19 “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations [people], baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
These are the words of Christ again. If you are a branch from the good vine, we have our direction cast for us. If we do this, we are with him. If we don’t, we are not.
Who is this guy? He’s God. He’s the creator of everything. He’s in the know way, way more than we are. It behooves us all to listen and act with this in mind.
