Leviticus 20:26 (NLT)
26 You must be holy because I, the Lord, am holy. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own.
Jeremiah 17:9 (NLT)
9 The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?
You must be holy…. Whoa, not me. I’m good enough, screw that holy stuff. Except for one thing – we’re called.
Who thinks of their heart as wicked? Not me except for when it is. Not naturally because we know good, right? Add to the list from yesterday Barcelona. It’s others hearts that are wicked, not me. I’m good enough. Except maybe for the porn, but porn is OK – everyone does it. Really? OK? Good enough? Some stats. http://fightthenewdrug.org/the-internet-can-be-a-very-unsexy-place-we/
I’m just sayin. Our hearts might, for the most part be good, but we need to recognize that in God’s eyes that’s not good enough. We tend to defend what we’re doing in terms of others – I’m not as bad as…. I once heard “I’m not as bad as those people on Jersey Shore!” OK. I guess that’s good enough? No, it’s not. Sorry.
I’m good enough? Who really knows how bad it is. God does and his windshield is perfection.
YOU MUST BE HOLY BECAUSE I, THE LORD, AM HOLY. I can hear that ricocheting off the walls of the earth, echoing over and over and over. Like a pleading, a warning, a call. I’ll use the porn example again – what wife/husband doesn’t plead for it to end? What father doesn’t want his daughter or young son back from the clutches of slave trade and porn? Think about all the hearts involved to make it go, to keep it alive. But, I’m good enough.
1 John 2:24-25 (NLT)
24 So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father. 25 And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us.
What have we been taught?
Matthew 25:36 (NLT)
36 “I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.”
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
4 God blesses those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 God blesses those who are humble,
for they will inherit the whole earth.
6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,
for they will be satisfied.
7 God blesses those who are merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure,
for they will see God.
9 God blesses those who work for peace,
for they will be called the children of God.
10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”
Matthew 7:12 (NLT)
“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”
This is good enough – the red letters. Is your good enough good enough?
